London Stock Exchange (LSE)
The London Stock exchange is the largest exchange in the UK and Europe. Formerly the Stock Exchange of Great Britain and Ireland it came about in 1973 when the regional exchanges were merged. Thanks to partnerships with exchanges in Asia and Africa it has companies listed from roughly 50 different countries.
The benchmark index of the LSE is the Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE) 100 that lists 100 of the highest valued LSE listed stocks.
In late 2006 the LSE was subject to several take over bids from NASDAQ that were deemed undervalued and consequently rejected.
