Short |

To
open a position by selling a security is a short position. It
is facilitated by the borrowing of shares from a broker and selling
them with the expectation that they will fall in value. The person
in question must then return the shares by buying them back from
the market. |

For
example, if a trader sells EURUSD at 1.2586 he/ she is said to
be short of the Euro (and long
of the Dollar). If a trader or investor buys the shares back from the market at a lower price than he/ she sold them a profit is made. If the shares are greater in value a loss is recorded. |
