Currency Symbols, Abbreviations and Codes - Foreign
Currency Symbols
International currencies are identified
using currency symbols (also known as foreign currency symbols,
international currency symbols, World currency symbols and foreign
exchange symbols). These symbols can be displayed in a variety
of different ways including graphic
currency symbols, three
letter currency codes (that you will see throughout
this site, also known as abbreviations) and symbols used in Western
text.
So why are there so many
ways of displaying each currency? Well it isn’t meant to
be confusing; in fact each method has its own specific purpose,
as you will read below…
- Graphic
symbols are
what you are likely to find on a currency’s
bank notes. It is a visual representation of a currency symbol
rather than a written one. However, Western currency symbols
often translate well into Western text, as you will see below.
Examples of this are the dollar sign “$”, the Euro
sign “€” and the Pound sign “£”.
- Currency
codes are used to identify a currency by banks, multinational
corporations, individual speculators and other financial institutions.
The purpose of this code is to be completely universal with each
currency given a unique 3-letter code. These codes are easily
identifiable by humans and computers alike. Examples of this
are AUD, the Australian Dollar and JPY, the Japanese Yen.
- Western
text format
is the method of displaying currency symbols in hand writing
and word processing software programs. As already mentioned,
the majority of the time graphic Western currency symbols
translate well into written text but there are examples when
this is not the case. Afghanistan Afghanis, Cambodian
Riels, Iranian Rials and Ukrainian Hryvnia are all good
examples of this.
